"How to Throw a Killer Dinner Party" by Amy Kim

Mr. and Mrs. Serial have decided to throw a dinner party for their dear friends, a painfully trendy and oh-so-sophisticated clique. One guest manages to make it into the society section of the Times every Sunday. Another is a bold faced item in the gossip columns twice a week. They frequent salons and socials. How dreadfully boring for a lively bon vivant to attend a fundraiser or charity buffet every weekend, and with the same predictable people! To make their life a little more interesting, the Serials have decided to take a chance tonight and make this one different soiree.

The menu for tonight: two poisonings, one bite of scorpion, one electrocution, one stab in the back, and a trap door to the hungry hounds.

Oh how I love to entertain!” gushes Bonnie Serial. “I am experimenting with a new recipe for Potage Bonne Femme and trying a new garnish.” And an aside, “This potion is absolutely a delicacy to die for!” Meanwhile, Clyde Serial is ever the gracious host and is his mate’s partner in crime, for better or for worse…’til death do they part.

Mr. Serial gingerly sets his prized pet at the feet of one of his deadpan guests, who muses, “What are they talking and howling about?”

Never leave a guest holding an empty glass, never.” Mrs. Serial begins her new mantra. “Have another my dear! Oh, and what’s this? Didn’t anyone ever teach you it is utterly rude to put your feet up on the davenport?”

And do have another drink. Don’t worry your pretty little head about driving home. Lose yourself and have fun.”

A thought, a Serial joke, “Ah, if you only knew, my dearest.” Then, sweetly, “How would you like to see my canine darlings in the den downstairs?”

Au revoir and bon appetit!
